Round 16 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Thursday night, July 5, with what shapes as a crucial game for a couple of the competition's top sides, the Sydney Swans and the Geelong Cats.

Both sides come off losses in Round 15 and will be keen to atone for their performances, especially given the fact that spots inside the eight are beginning to heat up, with finals just under two months away.

Last weekend, Sydney went down to the ladder leaders, Richmond, by 26 points, while Geelong missed out in a thriller to the Western Bulldogs by two after Harry Taylor missed a goal after the siren that would have given his side the four points.

The Cats are now clinging on to their spot in the top eight and are 8th, while Sydney are 4th. First bounce will be at 7.20PM AEST.

On Friday night, last years Grand Finalists, Richmond and Adelaide square off at the MCG. Plenty of water has flowed under the bridge since last year's decider with Adelaide struggling to back up their form from last year.

However, the Crows come off a confidence boosting victory over West Coast last weekend and another win here will keep them in the hunt. They have been posted as $4.40 outsiders in their quest to keep their season alive.

There are plenty of other key games throughout the weekend but two sides that won't be in the September action are Brisbane and Carlton. Those two meet at the GABBA on Saturday and it is the Lions that head in as favourites after their win over Fremantle last weekend.

Following this, Port Adelaide play host to St Kilda at the Adelaide Oval and the Power are expected to pick up a vital win as they aim to make the eight for the first time since 2014.

On Saturday night, it is the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn that meet at Etihad Stadium, while Melbourne take on Fremantle at TIO Stadium in Darwin. Both Hawthorn and Melbourne will need wins after missing out last weekend. Both are competing for spots in the bottom half of the eight.

On Sunday, there are three games to close out the round. North Melbourne have a golden opportunity to notch up a win when they take on the Gold Coast Suns at Etihad Stadium, while across town at the MCG a big crowd is expected for the clash between the two rivals, Essendon and Collingwood.

The last game of Round 16 will be when the West Coast Eagles host the GWS Giants at Perth Stadium. The Eagles will be out to break a three game losing streak and another loss will be a major blow for the early pacesetters this year.
