AFL Round 17 Fixtures and Preview - Crows and Cats jump start ladder shaping round

Adam Cusworth in Fixtures 11 Jul 2018
  • What games are taking place in AFL Round 17?

We are heading towards the business end of the AFL home and away season and Round 17 features plenty of important games as sides scramble for positions in the top eight.

The action gets underway on Thursday July 12 at 7.50PM when the Adelaide Crows take on the Geelong Cats at the Adelaide Oval.

The Crows are all but out of finals contention and sit in 11th spot on the ladder. A win will keep their remote finals hopes alive but it will be tough against a Cats outfit that are in 7th position and also need a win to keep the likes of Hawthorn, North Melbourne and GWS at bay.

The Cats come off a strong victory over Sydney last weekend but have been posted as the slight underdogs in the early head to head betting at this stage with the Crows holding the home-ground advantage.

Two sides that won't be featuring in September are St Kilda and Carlton and they are drawn to meet at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. They have combined for just four wins this season with St Kilda holding the advantage with three wins compared to the Blues solitary victory. Expect the Saints to get up here.

On Saturday there are four games in store and the first of those sees Hawthorn take on Brisbane at UTAS Stadium in Launceston. The Hawks went down to the Lions at the GABBA earlier in the season but are expected to turn the tables in this one.

Alistair Clarkson's side are set to capitalise on their kind draw in the next few weeks and advance further up the ladder but they will not want to drop this one.

Following this, it is Melbourne that face the Western Bulldogs at the MCG. The Demons snapped a three game losing streak last weekend and have been installed as warm favourites for the 4.35PM clash. They are currently 6th on the ladder.

On Saturday night, Essendon can keep their slim hopes alive when they travel to the Gold Coast to take on the struggling Suns, while GWS face Richmond at Spotless Stadium.

One of the key games of Round 17 will be on Sunday when Collingwood host the West Coast Eagles at the MCG. The two sides sit in 2nd and 3rd position's on the ladder. The Magpies have won their past seven and will take a power of beating at the MCG.

Another game that will have a bearing on top eight calculations will be the one to be played out between North Melbourne and Sydney at the MCG. Just one game separates the two sides on the ladder and little separates the two sides in betting markets.

The final game of Round 17 will be when Fremantle host Port Adelaide at Perth Stadium. The Dockers have a reasonable record at the venue this year but have been poor in the last two weeks. Look for Port to get the job done here.
