Round 19 of the AFL home and away season shapes as another cracker and eight of the nine scheduled matches will have some bearing on the make up of the top eight.

The action gets underway on Friday night, July 27, when Essendon host the Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium.

The Bombers come off a win over Fremantle in Round 18 and sit just one game outside the eight. They are in 11th position on the ladder and take on a Swans outfit that went down to the Gold Coast Suns in what was a massive upset last weekend.

John Longmire's side still cling on to 4th spot on the ladder but have a tough few weeks to come after the Bombers game. A loss will prove to be a major blow for their top four aspirations and may even place some doubt on their top eight chances. Essendon have been posted as slight favourites in the early head to head betting with CrownBet.

On Saturday there are five games in store and the first of those sees Richmond take on Collingwood at the MCG. The two powerful clubs currently occupy 1st and 3rd spots on the ladder and we can expect a crowd of up to 90,000 fans at the home of footy.

At the same time in Geelong, the Cats host the Brisbane Lions and the home side will be out to score back to back victories after scoring a thrilling after-the-siren win against Melbourne in Round 18.

Despite their late heroics, the Cats actually dropped a spot on the ladder and sit outside the eight due to their slightly inferior percentage.

Following this clash, Saturday twilight football sees the GWS Giants host St Kilda at Spotless Stadium and after defeating Port Adelaide in Round 18 the Giants will be looking to continue their impressive charge towards September.

Two sides that won't feature in the September action are the Gold Coast Suns and Carlton and the two cellar dwellers meet at Metricon Stadium at the Gold Coast. After toppling the Swans last weekend, the home side head in as favourites and will be looking to notch up their fifth win of the season.

Over in Adelaide, the Crows will be looking to keep their finals hopes alive when they play host to Melbourne at the Adelaide Oval. Don Pyke's side are out of the eight but have won three of their past four and are making a late charge, while Melbourne's position is in danger after their heart stopping loss to the Cats last weekend.

Sunday football features three games and the first of those will be played down in Hobart, where North Melbourne take on the West Coast Eagles at Blundstone Arena. The Kangaroos have all but slipped out of contention and another loss here will kill off their unlikely finals hopes.

Following this, Port Adelaide journey to Ballarat to take on the Western Bulldogs, while Fremantle host Hawthorn at Perth Stadium. Both Port and Hawthorn are among a group of six sides that are within a game each other and can ill afford to let their respective games slip.
