Round 20 of the AFL home and away season gets underway when Richmond take on Geelong at the MCG on Friday night.

The August 3 fixture is the first of nine huge games for the weekend and eight of those feature sides that are still in finals contention.

Richmond is one side that are safely inside the eight and the premiers currently sit on top of the ladder with four games to go until the finals series. They come off a 28 point win over Collingwood last weekend and have been posted as $1.32 favourites in the head to head betting in early markets with CrownBet for the clash against Geelong.

However, the Cats are not without a chance against the red-hot Tigers and head in with some winning form after they prevailed by 42 points against the Brisbane Lions last weekend. Chris Scott's side are currently 8th on the ladder and are amongst a group of sides that are battling it out for a spot in the finals

Two sides that are also in that mix are Hawthorn and Essendon. The rivals from the 1980's meet in the first of five games on Saturday and their contest will also be held at the MCG.

Hawthorn come off a comprehensive 59 point win against Fremantle and are 7th on the ladder, a game clear of 11th placed Essendon. Despite their superior standing, the Hawks are slight underdogs in the betting for this game and come up against a Bombers outfit that have won eight of their past 10 matches, including their Round 19 fixture against Sydney.

The other Saturday afternoon game pits the Brisbane Lions up against North Melbourne at the GABBA. North are currently in 10th position and another will be a big boost to their finals hopes and they have some winnable games to come.

One of the big highlights of the round will be the 'Showdown' in Adelaide between the two South Australian clubs, the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide. The Crows are all but out of contention after their loss to Melbourne last weekend, while Port are in the mix for a top four spot. They come off a win against the Western Bulldogs last weekend and currently sit in 4th position on the ladder but have a number of others breathing down their neck.

On Saturday night, St Kilda take on the Western Bulldogs but most interest will centre on the Sydney Swans and Collingwood clash at the SCG. The Swans have battled at the venue this season and come off two recent losses.

They are now outside thee eight and another loss will spell disaster. Nathan Buckley's Magpies also need to produce a big one after going down to Richmond in Round 19. The Pies are in 3rd position on the ladder and a win will see them take one step closer towards a top four spot at the end of the home and away season.

On Sunday, there are three games to close out the weekend and there looks to be some regulation wins in store for three likely finalists. The first of those sees Carlton take on 5th placed GWS at Etihad Stadium, while across town at the MCG we can expect Melbourne to secure the points against the Gold Coast Suns.

The action concludes when the West Coast Eagles play the Fremantle Dockers at Perth Stadium. The Eagles lost to North Melbourne but a win here will see them stay in 2nd spot on the ladder and in reach of a home final.
